Each season, we’re bombarded with what seem like a million trends we’re supposed to follow. It’s a little overwhelming, especially when you’re so busy adulting that you barely have time to think about fashion like you used to. So how do you fit some new trends into your wardrobe each season, in a mindful way? Here’s how to choose which fashion trends to go for, and why.

  1. Choose the trends with which you truly identify.

Always stay true to your personal style, rather than incorporating a trend just because it’s “in”. For example, one of fall 2017’s fashion trends is glittery footwear. I don’t know about you, but this is most certainly not an item that speaks to me. I don’t know of a single place I’d wear something like this, and if I did, it just wouldn’t look right. It’s not “me.”

Instead, I’d personally opt for another of fall’s standout trends, which is a bold red look. It’s something I’d definitely be able to incorporate into my wardrobe, maybe in bits and pieces, and it could be done in an understated way for everyday life as a mom and fashion professional.

Another fashion trend I adore is velvet footwear. I’m seeing velvet in every price range and on flats, mules, block heel pumps, stilettos, booties, and boots. They also come in a rainbow of colors. If you want to add a little texture into your fall wardrobe, this is one way to do it.

  1. Think ahead about cost per wear when investing in clothing.

In case you’re not familiar with this term, I use it often, and I’ve used it for many years. Cost per wear is the price you paid for an item, divided by the number of times you’ve worn it. The lower your cost per wear, the more use you’re getting out of the item! The more you wear the item, the better of an investment it becomes!

Your cost per wear can be high (bad) even at a low price point. If you only spent $20 on, say, a top, but you only wore that top once because it was super trendy or just wasn’t really your style after all (refer back to point 1 above), then your cost per wear came out to $20. Yikes! That’s not so good since that’s what it cost in the first place.

And in contrast, your cost per wear can be low (good) even at a high price point. Have you been dying for a designer handbag but didn’t know if you could justify the purchase? Let’s say you spent $500 on a classic, neutral-colored tote, and in the first year alone, you’ve carried that bag 300 times. Your cost per wear is already down to $1.66, and it’s destined to keep on going down! This is great news, and it means you’re getting your money’s worth out of this purchase!

  1. Go for timeless pieces.

When looking for pieces that you want to get a lot of use and value from, go for styles in classic cuts and silhouettes, and ones without a lot of design details or bold patterns.

Patterns will date an item and make it less likely that you’ll get a lot of use out of it. Similarly, drastic cuts (bell bottoms) can be worn minimally, and there is a higher chance that it will go out of fashion quicker.

(Faux) fur is a classic staple for winter and fall. It generally comes around each season in one way or another. This year, vintage styles are really in. But I happen to have a vest that I purchased a few years ago, and with some key choices with the rest of my outfit and jewelry, I’ll be able to fit my vest into the current season’s trends.

Stick to the middle of the spectrum and play it safe with the cuts and colors of your garments to help ensure you’ll get the most from these purchases.

My advice when deciding which fashion trends to invest in is to choose items that are timeless in design; true to your personal style; and ones that will give you value and a low cost per wear.

Now that you know how to choose the right trends to incorporate into your wardrobe, I’ve also written an article about the three Fall 2017 fashion trends that I recommend for moms, because they fit my requirements for buying a trend! I hope you find my advice helpful.
