There’s no better time of year to enjoy the beauty of Hilton Head Island, so much of which is thanks to its picturesque surroundings of ocean, creeks and marshes. As fall arrives, summer crowds dissipate, the weather turns a perfect mid-70 degrees and the marsh grass glistens in golden hues.

Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, one of the largest and most popular resorts on Hilton Head and centrally located on the island, offers autumn’s visitors many different ways to enjoy the Lowcountry’s natural beauty on the water.

Here are 5 ways to explore Hilton Head by water:

  1. Kayak the resort’s 11-mile lagoon — By renting a kayak or canoe at the onsite Hilton Head Outfitters just outside the resort gates, you can peacefully explore the island and resort from a different perspective. The lagoon winds through the undulating landscape of the resort’s golf courses, behind beautiful homes and even offers opportunities for fishing by specially-fitted kayak or boat.

  2. Swim in the sea — Palmetto Dunes offers 3 miles of Atlantic Ocean beachfront with fall days still plenty warm for a dip in the sea. Grab a boogie board or surf board to catch some waves or simply enjoy a frolic in the surf.

  3. Paddleboard the creek — Rent a paddleboard from Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina, the resort’s shopping, entertainment and marina district located just across the road, and enjoy exploring Broad Creek and its plentiful wildlife. Keep an eye out for dolphin — and even otters — who sometimes make their way up the creek.

  4. Haul in a fresh catch — Whether you’re looking for inland fishing in the Palmetto Dunes lagoon or want to give deep sea fishing a try off the South Carolina coast, Palmetto Dunes has fishing charters, leaving both from Hilton Head Outfitters and from Shelter Cove Marina. Fall is an especially excellent season for fishing with large redfish headed inshore.

  5. Take a ride in a catamaran – A fun way to explore the creeks and inlets of Hilton Head is via catamaran. From Shelter Cove Marina, visitors can rent this two-seat powered boat that goes up to 30 miles per hour. It sits close to the water, making it ideal to see wildlife up close.
