We all tend to take oral hygiene as a given, yet your teeth and gums do need regular inspection, as there are many issues that could arise. There is more to good oral health than simply visiting your dentist every 6 months, and even the toothpaste you choose can have a bearing on your overall health. There are so many brands of toothpaste out there, each making claims of whiter teeth and fresher breath, yet some of these products actually contain harmful ingredients.
- Fluoride – For many years, dentists recommended toothpaste with fluoride, which is said to combat tooth decay, yet there is evidence that fluoride can cause discoloration spots on tooth enamel. There is also evidence that fluoride negatively impacts endocrine function and more and more people are switching to a fluoride-free toothpaste. There is a lot of resources on the Internet regarding the dangers of fluoride, so you can read up and make your own decision. Fluoride might negatively impact teeth sensitivity, although we aren’t sure about that one.
- Propylene Glycol – This is used to lengthen a product’s shelf life, texture, and appearance. There aren’t that many toothpaste brands that contain this substance, but you should read the label carefully before buying. If you wear dentures, the tooth implant cost in Sydney or in your city is affordable and offers you a permanent solution to missing teeth. No more removing them in the evening, your dental implants are permanent and should be cared for as natural teeth, with brushing and flossing as normal.
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – SLS is used as a foaming agent in some toothpaste and this is to be avoided if you have sensitive teeth. The substance can cause a reaction with tooth enamel, worsening the sensitivity, so do read the packaging carefully before putting it in your shopping basket.
- Parabens – This substance can be found in some toothpaste and is added to prolong the shelf life of a product. Parabens are known to affect the hormones and there is a lack of research (the FDA is currently reviewing this), which means you should stay away from toothpaste that contains parabens, at least until FDA clearance is given.
- Triclosan – Some scientists believe that triclosan negatively impacts the thyroid glands, according to an FDA-backed study. We’re unsure whether this would impact teeth sensitivity, but it is best to avoid triclosan until the FDA gives it the green light. This chemical is also in other products, including cosmetics, and until the regulatory boards come to a conclusion, you should avoid using a toothpaste that contains triclosan.
Let’s not forget that a 6-monthly visit to our dentist is recommended, when the health professional carries out a thorough oral examination; any issues can be promptly dealt with. Use a toothpaste that is recommended for sensitive teeth and check to confirm the absence of the above ingredients before making a purchase.
We must all be aware that certain substances can be harmful to our health and reading the product ingredients should be second nature. If you’re looking for a dental expert right now, you can check out this dentist in Oakbrook Terrace.
