It’s a gorgeous summer day. The weather is awesome—sunny and warm, but not too hot. What better way to enjoy the day with the kids than going on a picnic? It’s a super-fun way of getting away from it all and connecting with the family. You might decide for a picnic in the park, at the beach or lakeside… or even in your own backyard. Once you’ve decided where and what picnic treats you will take along to eat, comes the dilemma—what should you wear?

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Read on for some special picnic outfit tips.

Dress down or up

Yes, you can wear a dress for a picnic with the kids. T-shirt dresses are perfect since they are lightweight and offer a relaxed but sporty and often slimming fit. Go for a maxi dress if you’re looking for more coverage. Maxi dresses are airy and great for women who wear plus-size clothing. Opt for pastels, bright colors, neutral hues or even eye-catching prints. Then combine with a straw hat and some sandals or slides. Dresses are perfect items for formal and informal occasions. Consider a cardigan to slip over your shoulders if needed.

Skirts and tees

Try a midi skirt with a fitted tee—casual but chic! Maxi skirts can also look super with a flowy top. Ever heard of skorts? They’re a combination of a skirt with shorts built-in underneath. So, you get all the freedom of a skirt, but don’t have to worry if you squat down, are playing, or if there is a gust of wind. You can add a nice top and a canvas sunhat, plus your shades for that perfect look. Wear them with slides, sandals, or even pumps.

Capris – simply a breeze!

The cropped pant is a great wardrobe essential and fantastic for wearing to a picnic. There’s no end to the variety of materials, colors, and styles when it comes to capris. You can opt for 100% cotton when it’s hot. Linen capris are great too for hot days since the fabric is breathable and also ultra-light. You might like to consider capris with elastic fitted into the waist for maximum comfort and freedom of movement. Capri pants can look wonderful with any style of top too. Try them with short-sleeve tops, tunics, tees, or tank tops. Slip on some sneakers or slides and a sports cap against the sun. What about a straw basket bag as the ultimate picnic accessory?

Shorts

What would we do without shorts in summer? There is no end to the range of styles—something for everyone. High-rise shorts look really trendy and go well with tees, knit tops and sleeveless shirts. If you prefer more fabric…then go for Bermuda shorts and your favorite T-shirt. Mix and match shorts with any style of top from your wardrobe. Again, go for flat footwear—we don’t need heels!

Swimwear

For picnics at a lake or the beach, don’t forget to take along some swimwear. Make a splash with your kids in a one-piece swimsuit or even a tankini. The range of colors is endless, but go for navy or black for a classic look. You can slip over your swimsuit a cover-up like a kaftan or beach dress if you like.  You’ll need of course to add a good pair of sunglasses.

Don’t forget

No matter where you have your picnic, there are some items you shouldn’t forget. Take along a first-aid kit since you never know what could happen. Remember sun cream and sun protection for your head and eyes. Have fun kite flying, bug hunting, playing catch, flower or leaf collecting with your kids… looking your best.  Don’t forget to take lots of pictures and when the day’s over, make yourself a cooling and yummy summer drink and relax!
