The Ultimate Guide to Potty Training

Does the thought of training your little one to use the bathroom like a big girl send a cold chill through your entire being? There’s no single method of potty training that works for everyone and there seems to be no right or wrong way to go about scaling this monumental task.

We tried several methods, finding varying levels of success with each. We ultimately crossed the finish line when we combined the use of Pull-Ups® Training Pants with the potty-prize box! It was so successful for us, that after a week – we reached the point of not needing to remind her to try to use the restroom nor did she always remember to tell us she went or earned a surprise out of the potty-prize box.

Here are our favorite ways to help this transition fun and a little easier for parent and child!

Wait It Out

This is exactly what it sounds like. Wait. And then wait a little more. With this method, you’ll place your child onto the potty and allow them to sit and wait for a period of time – to see if anything happens. We know of many families who found this to work well for them. It seemed to be hit-or-miss for us!

Training-Pants (We love Pull-Ups® Training Pants)

This was by far the best method for us. Nothing seemed to give Savannah a prouder feeling than strolling the aisle at Sam’s Club®, picking out her favorite character on the Pull-Ups® Training Pants, and then selecting her own box of Cottonelle® FreshCare® wipes. She was so excited to finally get home, to pull the training pants up herself and place her very own wipes by the potty. Her sudden independence gave her an even bigger push to visit the bathroom from time-to-time to try this whole potty-thing out. She loved it! And we loved that she felt ‘grown-up’ with her new Doc McStuffins and Lightning McQueen Pull-Ups® Training Pants and that she could get and feel clean with the Cottonelle® FreshCare® wipes. Both were great to have on hand for when those accidents did happen when we were running errands or visiting with friends. So be sure to keep both in your down-sized toddler bag!

Love this method as much as we do? Visit Sam’s Club® where you can purchase any two Pull-Ups® Training Pants and/or Cottonelle® Fresh Care® Flushable Cleansing Cloths between 5/31-6/30/16 and receive a $10 Sam’s Club e-Gift Card!

Potty-Prize Box

This combined with the above easy-to-use Pull-Ups® Training Pants was the big winner in our home! What’s a Potty-Prize Box? It’s a box filled with little prizes for your little one’s success! Each time she successfully used the potty, we let her have a surprise from the Potty-Prize Box. The prizes can be little items such as bubbles, stickers and other things you might find in the dollar bin of your favorite store.

No Diaper, No Training Pants, No Clothes – No Problem?

I’ve had friends swear by this method (combined with a lot of juice and water) but the terrified parent in me only allowed this method to last for about ten minutes. I had a difficult time imagining my toddler running through the house with sippy-cup in hand, sans clothing or training pants. If you’re feeling adventurous, why not give it a go. But I would highly recommend having a back up plan in the event it doesn’t go well. I’d also keep a box of Pull-Ups® Training Pants for the moments when you must leave the house.
