Wondering if it’s time to sell your old car? Maybe those thoughts are in the back of your mind, but you’ve been pushing them aside. If your car is sentimental to you and you’re made a lot of memories, which is why it’s so hard to say goodbye. To help you make the right decision, look at these signs it’s time to sell your old ride and see if you can relate.

It doesn’t meet your needs

While your junk car may have served you well a decade ago, it’s unable to keep up with your changing life. If you’re now a parent, you probably don’t want to drive your car around in your old, rusty car. It’s time to consider a SUV or a minivan so you can take your kid to ballet lessons or a soccer game without fear.

Or maybe you’re working at a new job that requires you to commute or be on the road for a large part of the day. Instead of driving a few miles, you drive all across the city and back. If so, it’s time for a new car that isn’t a gas-guzzler. As your needs evolve and your car no longer meets them, it’s a good time to sell your car.

It’s held together by duct tape

If you hop into your car daily hoping it makes it from here to there, it may be time to sell your car. Do others look at you in horror when you drive down the road? Even though it might be sentimental to you, it’s a junky ride to others. If it’s rusting badly and your muffler is held up with a chain, it may be time to sell your old ride. No A/C? Not sure if the car is even going to start? Experiencing transmission problems? Think about selling your impractical old car now.

Repairs are costly

You may feel nostalgic when you think of the time you got your car. You cruised town when it was still in great condition, but now you have to shell out repairs for it every month. From the transmission to ball joints to control arms to a catalytic converter, your car is costing you a lot of money.

Don’t forget about the car safety checks you need to perform to ensure your car isn’t dangerous. You don’t want to find yourself in a position where you or your family or friends could get hurt. When the repairs required to keep your car safe and running start to cost more than the car is worth, it’s time to move on.

Parts are difficult to find

Each year that goes by makes it more and more difficult to find the parts needed to fix your car. The car world changes quickly, and the parts you need are no exception.

What this means is that many older cars are phased out and this makes parts difficult to find and expensive to pay for. Sell your car while you can because soon no one will want it.

You can’t trust it

If you can’t trust your car and find yourself with a pit in your stomach trying to start it on a snowy morning, trust your gut. That feeling of unease is there for a reason. Once you lack trust in your car and don’t know if you can rely on it to get you where you need to go, you should part ways with it and get a vehicle you can rely on.

If you think it may be time for a new car, you’re probably right. These are valid reasons to split ways with your old ride, and if you can relate to them, it’s clear that it’s time to sell your car.
