I recently spent some time cruising around in and trying out the 2013 Honda Accord. I have been a fan of the Accord since High School when I first set my sites on owning one. I loved the design of the front end and was a little sad when it changed tremendously during my college years. Though the look has advanced over the years – it is still reminiscent of the car I fell in love with.

The new aerodynamically efficient and stylish body design favors its previous appearance. I enjoy when a vehicle can be updated with new technology and appearance – yet the evolution of its design is still present. The character line that flows upward and toward the rear of the vehicle add to the stylish and sleek appearance of the design. It appears as if it is in motion even when sitting still.

One of my favorite aspects of the Accord has always been the amazing visibility. When driving an Accord – especially the 2013 model – I feel as if I have an unobstructed view regardless of the direction I am maneuvering.

A friend of ours is employed (not by Honda) where high strength steel is manufactured for a number of vehicles – one of them being the new Accord – noticed what vehicle I was testing and mentioned the high strength steel in which the Accord was now being built.  I found it fascinating! Below is the description provided by Honda.

The 2013 Accord unit-body uses 55.8-percent high-tensile steel, more than in any previous Accord. In addition, 17.2-percent of the steel is now grade 780, 980 and 1,500 – extremely high grades that have never before been used in any Accord. This contributes to higher body rigidity and reduced weight, which directly benefits ride and handling, interior quietness, performance and efficiency and long-term durability.

The measured improvements in rigidity are significant. In static tests, bending rigidity is up 34 percent and torsional rigidity is up 42-percent compared to the previous-generation Accord. In dynamic tests, front lateral rigidity is up 16 percent and rear vertical rigidity is up 39-percent.

I really enjoy all the safety and help features that are currently being added to various vehicles.  Rear-view cameras have been around for several years – but I still love finding them on models that I’ve tested. I found a new addition to this type of driving enhancement on the 2013 Accord.  A LaneWatch™ Blind Spot Display!

Honda LaneWatch™ Blind Spot Display

The new Honda LaneWatch™ blind spot display, included on Accord EX, EX-L and Touring Sedan models and EX-L Coupe, uses a camera located below the passenger-side mirror to display an expanded rear view of the passenger side roadway on the intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID). (See the Interior section for more information.)

After noticing this display when I went to make my first right turn in the vehicle – I immediately had to find a place to park to see how this view had been manufactured. What an amazing idea to place a camera on the passenger side near the mirror to give you an additional view of your surroundings!

Having driven an Accord for going on 12 years – it was nice to slide into the driver’s seat and see an updated dash that was reminiscent of my own vehicle. Though everything has obviously been updated throughout the years – the dashboard and driver’s seat remain very familiar. The rest of the interior keeps with the Accord tradition in providing a lot of space. The roomy backseat allowed for easier placement of three car seats than my current Accord – which I think is still pretty spacious. I’ve always enjoyed the amount of space that I have in my vehicle. This Accord also kept with that design – allowing for a large trunk area.
