My son began trying to nurse within minutes of being born. That may be a slight exaggeration, but it’s close. As soon as he was wrapped up and in the arms of a nurse – he began trying to latch on to something. He was soon placed in my arms and allowed to begin rooting around.

But, I had nothing for him. The nurses encouraged me to allow him to do what he needed to do – and ensured me that he would soon get enough colostrum and all would be right in our world.

Three hours later, he still hadn’t gotten what his tummy needed and was in full-blown meltdown. I was already traumatized by not being able to properly nurse my daughter a couple of years prior – and was panicked that he was so panicked and pitiful looking.

I asked for a bottle.

I was encouraged to keep trying.

I was sore, he was scream-crying. I demanded a bottle.

I never tried to nurse again. For me, it was scarring because I felt like such a failure at something I felt I needed to give my babies. I hadn’t really been counseled or educated in ways to increase milk production and supply. So, I was left clueless and depressed about the entire situation.
